The Nigerian Bar Association has relocated its 2025 Annual General Conference from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to Enugu, citing concerns over unconstitutional governance and a breakdown of democratic order in Rivers. The decision was made after the federal government imposed a Sole Administrator, a retired military officer, to govern the state, which the NBA describes as a clear departure from constitutional norms.
In a statement signed by NBA President Afam Osigwe, General Secretary Mobolaji Ojibara, and Chairman of the AGC Planning Committee, Emeka Obegolu, the association expressed its disapproval of the administrator's "command-style" governance, stating that it undermines democratic institutions and processes. The NBA also condemned the suspension of elected officials and democratic institutions in the state, calling the National Assembly's ratification of the move a "grave constitutional subversion".
The conference, initially expected to take place in Port Harcourt, had garnered significant interest, with high registration figures before the declaration of a state of emergency on March 18, 2025. However, the NBA decided to relocate the event to Enugu, citing concerns that holding the conference in Rivers would amount to a tacit endorsement of constitutional violations and subversion of the rule of law.
The new host city, Enugu, is expected to provide the necessary infrastructure and capacity to accommodate the conference. The NBA has reassured members that preparations for a successful and impactful conference are well underway in Enugu. The 2025 Annual General Conference is set to be an engaging and memorable experience for attendees, with a focus on promoting excellence, innovation, and integrity in the legal profession.
