Lamidi Apapa has taken over the leadership of the Labour Party, citing a recent Supreme Court judgment that nullified Julius Abure's leadership. Apapa, the most senior National Deputy Chairman, claims the apex court verdict puts him in a position to replace Abure.
The Supreme Court had set aside the Court of Appeal's decision recognizing Abure as the party's national chairman. Apapa stated that all actions taken by Abure since April 4, 2023, are null and void.
Apapa will lead the party in an acting capacity, with Alh Farouk Umar Ibrahim as National Secretary. The National Working Committee of the party will meet on April 14, 2025, to discuss zoning arrangements, including allocating the National Chairman position to the North and National Secretary to the South.
Apapa's return to the party comes after a year of absence, and his leadership is backed by Governor Alex Otti and LP presidential candidate Peter Obi. The party's internal conflicts may escalate, given the competing interests and claims of legitimacy.
