The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially received a petition from constituents of Kogi Central Senatorial District, seeking the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from the Senate. The petition, submitted on Monday, March 24, 2025, marks the beginning of a constitutional process that could potentially lead to the senator's removal.
According to reports, the petition was signed by over 250,000 registered voters in the constituency, exceeding the required 50% threshold to initiate the recall process. The constituents are citing the need for active representation in the Senate as the reason behind their push for Senator Natasha's recall.
This development comes on the heels of Senator Natasha's suspension from the Senate on March 6, 2025, due to allegations of "gross misconduct". The controversy surrounding her suspension has sparked a national debate, with many calling for her removal from office.

INEC, as the electoral body responsible for overseeing the recall process, will now review the petition and follow due process as outlined in the constitution. If the petition is deemed valid, a referendum will be conducted within 90 days to determine whether Senator Natasha will be recalled.
The recall effort has been met with mixed reactions, with some arguing that it is a legitimate exercise of the constituents' rights, while others claim it is politically motivated. Regardless of the outcome, this development highlights the importance of accountability in governance and the power of citizens to demand representation that serves their interests.
