Senate President Godswill Akpabio has submitted a formal petition to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, requesting an investigation into a malicious claim made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The claim, made during a public address in Kogi State, alleged that Akpabio encouraged former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello to harm her.
Akpabio denies the allegations, calling them "reckless and deliberate attempts" to damage his reputation and provoke unrest. He emphasizes that the claims lack evidence and are designed to manipulate public opinion for political advantage.
The petition, dated April 3, 2025, requests a thorough investigation and legal action against Akpoti-Uduaghan for making harmful and misleading public claims. Akpabio expresses concern over the widespread coverage of the allegation across media platforms, urging law enforcement agencies to treat the matter with urgency.
The petition has also been forwarded to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, for further action. Akpabio seeks prosecution of Akpoti-Uduaghan under relevant laws for criminal defamation, incitement, false accusation, and actions likely to cause a breach of public peace.
